52 Weeks of Pinterest – Week 1: Family Handprint Tree

This year I wanted to go with a resolution I would have no problem sticking to! Then as I was pinning an item on Pinterest, a light bulb flashed on above my head. Ok, maybe not literally, but this great idea popped into my head. Those of us who are Pinterest users know that we pin hundreds of things a week, but do we ever do them? So I decided this year I would do one of my pins every week. At the moment, 52 weeks of Pinterest was born. Each week I will do something I found on Pinterest rather it be a craft, new recipe, organizing technique, or whatever!

This week, I went with one of my favorite pins: The Family Handprint Tree!

I like this pin because it involves the whole family and that it is really flexible as far as materials go.

The original pin went with poster board and a frame. I wanted mine to stand out! So I went with canvas, and 18×24 canvas to be exact. However you could use pretty much anything you wanted from poster board to wood, you pick.

What You Will Need:

Whatever item you choose to make your tree on
Paint
Paintbrush
Some Hands
Quote (Optional)

There are four of us in my family and as this is a bigger canvas, I wanted the tree to look fuller. I decided that it would be best if we each did two hands rather than one. Though I liked the simplicity of the original pin, I found a fuller tree would look, well. more like a tree.

First the tree was done. We then took turns doing our handprints from biggest to smallest member; you want to wait for each set of handprints to dry so you don’t smudge them. I also took a different route from the original pin and decided I wanted to get our hands overlapping, of course this is personal opinion, do yours however you would wish.

Once the tree and handprints were done, I had to add more or it would have looked to plain for me. So I went with the family quote seen because it made sense with a picture of the tree there. Cliche? Probably, but I like it! 🙂

I didn’t want to incorporate the year done on the front because I figured the numbers would look tacky. I ended up writing 2013 on the back of the canvas on part of the wood holding it together.

This was a fun craft for all family members – I mean who doesn’t love painting with their hands? Years from now we will be able to look at this canvas on the wall and have fun memories. My husband even suggested that someday if we have grandkids they could add their handprints. Say what honey – our children are 2 and 4, let’s not talk grandkids! After I got over the shock of those words, his idea is grand!

Make sure to pin this to Pinterest to save for later! If you are not following us on Pinterest, make sure to do so now so you don’t miss out on some great pins!
