52 Weeks of Pinterest: Week 20 – Sugar Cookie Bars!

This year I wanted to go with a resolution I would have no problem sticking to! Then as I was pinning an item on Pinterest, a light bulb flashed on above my head. Ok, maybe not literally, but this great idea popped into my head. Those of us who are Pinterest users know that we pin hundreds of things a week, but do we ever do them? So I decided this year I would do one of my pins every week. At the moment, 52 weeks of Pinterest was born. Each week I will do something I found on Pinterest rather it be a craft, new recipe, organizing technique, or whatever!

This week I decided to go with a pin from the Desserts Board: Sugar Cookie Bars. I followed the original recipe exactly!


What you will need:


  • 2-1/2 cups bread flour (or all-purpose flour is fine)
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1-1/2 Tbsp. sour cream
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup half and half
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • Pinch of salt
  • Several drops of food coloring (optional)


Let me first say that I love sugar cookies, if I could live on sugar cookies, I would. I have even attempted my own Homemade Lofthouse Cookies which were awesome as well.

Alright, let’s get to work! First thing you need to do is combine your flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl and then set aside.

In a new bowl cream together sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Add sour cream and vanilla, mix completely.

Start pre-heating your oven to 375°. Mix your flour mixture into your sugar mixture a little at a time until completely mixed.

Butter or spray your 13 x 9 pan. Place your cookie dough in the pan and gently press it into the pan to make it as even as possible. I sprayed my hands with Pam so that my hands wouldn’t stick to the dough while doing this.

Place them in the oven for 17-20 minutes until the edges become lightly golden.

You will want these cookies to cool completely prior to frosting them.

To make your frosting,

Cream together your butter and powdered sugar until completely mixed. Add in your vanilla and  half & half, mix thoroughly. Once mixed, you can add in your food coloring if you would like.

Spread your frosting on the cooled pan of cookie. Once it is evenly spread, cut them in squares and wala! These are super yummy and I think they are a great new take on an old favorite. I think these will be awesome for bringing to Summer BBQs or potlucks too.
