Do It Yourself Agua Fresca for Cinco de Mayo!

Cinco de Mayo is around the corner which means it’s time to celebrate! One of my favorite things about this Mexican celebration (it’s the day that commemorates Mexico’s defeat of France) is the gathering of friends and family to eat, drink, and be merry! So, in honor of this holiday, I’m going to show you how to make a traditional YUMMY Mexican drink called Agua Fresca (fresh water). Not only is it perfect for this occasion but it will pair perfectly with any outdoor activity you may take part in this summer!

  • Fruit (stick with the melon or berry family; they’re the easiest)
  • Sugar (you can use a sugar free substitute)
  • Water
  • Any tool you can find to mash your fruit with
  • Container to hold your fresca

*Note: I will not be giving you exact measurements because the flavor depends on the fruit you’re using, the quantity you’re making, and the sweetness you desire.

The first thing you’ll want to do is choose your fruit. I used one of those mini seedless watermelons. It’s the perfect size to make a few drinks.

Once you’ve chosen your fruit,  remove any skins or core your berries, and slice them into small pieces.

Next, take your sliced fruit and add it to a bowl. Use a potato masher or the back of a utensil to mash your fruit (you may use a blender but that is not traditional).

IMG_8454 Once your fruit has been mashed and much of the juice extracted, add water. Add about a cup at a time so you can “taste test” along the way.

IMG_8460As you can see, I did have some seeds float to the top. If this happens to you as well, just spoon them out.

Next, add your sugar or sugar substitute by the tablespoon.

IMG_8463 Stir your sugar to mix and taste test. Continue to add your sweetener until your desired sweetness is achieved. Just remember, the longer the fruit sits in the water, the sweeter it will become!

Pour your Agua Fresca into a container and slip into the refrigerator to get nice and cold.

Your drink is ready to serve once it’s nice and cold. However, letting it sit in the fridge overnight will greatly benefit your drink as it gives the fruit enough time to infuse with the water and sweetener. YUMMY!

*You may remove the fruit pieces after your flavor is achieved but it is not necessary.

That’s it! Just serve and enjoy!
