Teach Your Kids to Care- Rainbow Loom Project

crafterhours-rainbow-loom-header

My mom did this really well.  I remember a Christmas she had us pick a present out from under the tree.  She explained there was a little girl she knew who did not have anything for Christmas.  We were not well off ourselves so Christmas was one of the only times we really got gifts.  I remember being so sad and mad that I had to give up a precious gift.  But she drove my brother, sister, and I over to the home of the little girl.  The house was in horrible condition.  We handed our gifts over (begrudgingly).  The little girls face lite up, her mother was crying and I remember feeling ashamed that I had been selfish.  That lesson changed me.  It was a hard sacrifice, but one I am still thankful for.

How did my mom do that?  How do we do that for our kids?  In a world where we want for nothing (compared to the most of the worlds citizens).  We found this cool crafters (Crafter Hours) blog who is doing it smart.  She and her friend support A-HOPE a non-profit that is serving children who are infected or orphaned by the HIV epidemic in Ethiopia.  They will be taking a service trip with supplies this Spring.  They are encouraging kids (along with us) to make loom-band bracelets to take with them.  I just think this would be a terrific way to support a large cause in an affordable way, teach your kids compassion and about larger world issues by simply capitalizing on something they already enjoy doing.

If you want to participate you and your kids can make bracelets and send them here BY MARCH 15:

1: Make bracelets by March 15th
