Homemade Bath Crayons

Being able to color on the bathtub during bath time? What kid wouldn’t like this idea! With this fun and simple recipe, out of things you already have right at home, you can make your own set of homemade bath crayons (and your kids will love you for it).

What you will need is some grated bar soap, or powder soap (not detergent). Some liquid food coloring. & 3 Tablespoons to 1/4 cup of warm water.

Take the grated soap and warm water and mix together.

Add food coloring (less for pastel color, more for a darker color).

Mix until it starts to thicken.

Once mixture starts to hold its shape, you can either roll it up into balls, or use cookie cutters/etc. to shape them into other creative things. Wait for the soap to harden a couple days before using in the tub. Also, test food coloring on the tub beforehand to make sure it doesn’t stain. You can make multiple batches all at once for different colors.

Sit back, and watch the kiddos enjoy! 🙂

Homemade Potato Chips

Make yourself some tasty potato chips, right at home!

Although it’s a lot easier to pop open a store-bought bag of chips, this is a fun and tasty way to make healthy chips and know everything that’s being put in them.

Grab some good-sized potatoes (you can use any type you like, just make sure they are firm and without green spots or sprouting).

Peel and rinse the potatoes.

Slice evenly and as thin as you like. Dont worry about them being too thin, as thick-sliced homemade chips are still delicious. If you own a mandoline, you can use it for slicing. Otherwise just use a sharp knife.

Soak the slices in cold water for 30 minutes (this will help slices fry up crispy, and remove excess starch).

Drain slices and dry them thoroughly on a paper towel.

Heat a 1/2 inch of vegetable/canola/grapeseed oil up to 350 degrees in a large heavy pot or pan (if you dont have a frying thermometer just throw in a slice of potato once the oil is heated up, and if it immediately sizzles, the oil is the right temperature).

Fry slices in the oil, in a single layer, until golden brown on each side (about 3 minutes).

Transfer the slices from the pot to a cooling rack or paper towels, to drain. Sprinkle with salt and pepper or any other seasoning you would like. Wait until they are completely cool and crisp before eating. Repeat for all slices.

Enjoy!

5 Ways to Save on School Supplies

The new school year is creeping up on us very quickly, and every time there’s a new list of things to be bought. If you haven’t done your shopping for school supplies yet, here are a few tips on how to save money when you do go:

  • Make a List: If the school hasn’t already provided you one, make a list of things your child will need. Write down things you’ll only need to buy one of (scissors, backpack, etc.) and those that you’ll need a lot of throughout the year (paper, pencils, crayons etc.) Lists are good organizational tools for keeping you in check with what, and how many, things you need to buy.
  • Go Alone: Children have a way of haggling you for every pretty eraser or pen, and you will find yourself with a cart full of unneeded items before you know it.  Husbands are also known to spend an average of $40 more on school supplies.
  • Buy Plain: A one-color notebook always costs less than a notebook a lot of graphics. Also, since kids change taste very quickly, a plain lunchbox or backpack will last a lot more than one year. Try to keep it simple, and you’ll find yourself saving more than you thought you could.
  • Buy After School Starts: If you wait a couple of days for school to start, you can hit up the stores and buy supplies at prices up to 50-80% lower! Sure, your child will have to bear the first day of school without all the new supplies, and the stores may have less variety, but it’s a good way to save on supplies that wont be needed yet on the first few days.
  • Spread Out Your Buying: Buy school clothes and supplies throughout the year when there are big sales, instead of all at once.  This way you can also compare prices throughout the year. It may be a little late for that this year, but now you know for next year!

Though there are items that are worth their price and that you shouldn’t skimp on. Cheaper isn’t always better, so you should look for quality supplies that are on sale instead of just generic cheap items. Happy saving!

DIY Braided Headband

Headbands are a hott item right now, and you see them all around. They’re fun because they add a pop of color to your hair/outfit, and there’s so many ways to use them! Here’s a very quick and easy way to make a braided headband right at home

What you will need: three ribbons or pieces of cloth of your choice (mix up some fun colors!). Make sure they are all long enough to go around your head and still have left over sides.

Tie a knot using all three pieces.

Braid pieces until there is enough braid to go all the way around your head. Tie it off with a second knot.

Now it’s all ready to wear! Just put the headband around your head and tie in the back, by the two end knots. You can either let the excess ribbon/cloth hang down in your hair, or cut it short. If you dont like the boho style of wearing a headband around your head, you can always wear it like a normal headband. And if you just dont like headbands in general, you can use this same process to make really cute wrap-around braided bracelets!

Enjoy!

Homemade Baby Food Applesauce

There is a very easy, and cheap way to create healthy organic baby food right at home.Though baby food is mostly used to help familiarize babies from 4-6 months with different kinds of solid foods, children of all ages will love some of these tasty pureed recipes. They’re full of vitamins, too! This recipe is for a natural home made apple sauce, but you can recreate this with many other fruits and vegetable mixtures for different flavors of baby food.

To start out, get some apples (the number will depend on the quantity of baby food needed).

Peel, core, and slice up the apples into manageable pieces.

Put the slices in a pan/pot, and fill with just enough water to cover the tops of the apple slices.

Boil until slices are tender.

Pour out slices and most of the water into a blender. Blend mixture well, until smooth, like applesauce. You may add cinnamon or sugar for extra flavor.

Pour into container, and keep cool until needed.
