Begginer Tips: Shopping on Amazon!

Begginer Tips: Shopping on Amazon!

Oh how I love shopping on Amazon! Let me list the reasons:

1.) Free shipping on almost everything
2.) Awesome Customer Service
3.) Great food & diaper/wipes prices – sometimes as low as coupon prices!
4.) Subscribe and Save
5.) Amazon Mom
6.) Options, Options, Options
7.) HOT toy and gift deals during Christmas
8.) Free music & book downloads
9.) I can shop in my ugly PJ’s with my no-makeup face and bed hair – and no one knows
10.) I don’ t have to deal with crazy kids and candy bribes (#1 reason Begginer Tips: Shopping on Amazon! )

If you have aversions to signing up for online memberships and programs – I get it. I’ve had a few nightmare experiences with online subscriptions and have paid my fair share of return shipping – ugh – that’s the worst! Here’s some info that may help you shop Amazon headache-free and maximize your savings online.

Subscribe & Save:
This is a hot feature Amazon offers – don’t be afraid to use it! Basically, by agreeing to let Amazon bill and ship you on a fixed schedule, you get a 15% savings on the item you’re ordering. Subscribe & Save does not apply to every item, only items shipped by Amazon and generally on food, hygiene, or baby items. You’ll find these are items you would normally need to purchase every month or so at the grocery store. If you’re item qualifies, you’ll see the Subscribe and Save option under the item description and price and also in the right sidebar.

Begginer Tips: Shopping on Amazon!

When purcahsing an item with this option, I always select the longest period of time between shipments (6 months – see image). This assures that I will have plenty of time to cancel my subscription before a second shipment is shipped. You do NOT have to keep the subscription. Simply sign up to receive the 15% discount, then once your order ships (usually the next day or so), head back into your account and cancel the subscription (see image below) No obligation, no hassle, AND is saves you money! Easy. Just remember to cancel Begginer Tips: Shopping on Amazon! . Set your phone alarm, jot it on your calendar – whatever you need to do.

Subscribe & Save items are always sent with free standard shipping, and you can cancel at any time.

Beginner Tips: Stock Up Price List

Beginner Tips: Stock Up Price List

Below I have listed product prices that I use to determine whether or not or how much to buy during sales. Creating universal price lists are tough. Stock up prices depend on where you live, what your needs are and what time of year you need them. Stock up prices also change each year just based on simple supply and demand  economics.

These are basic price guidelines that I’m currently using here in Idaho and are completely based on my personal opinion. I’ve categorized my prices into three groups:

“Good” = a good price without using coupons
“Better” = a good price when using coupons
“Best”  = awesome stock up price when using coupons (buy 3 – 12 month supply)

A few thing to remember:
*Sales cycle every 3-6 months. If you miss a sale, you’ll likely see a similar one in 3-6 months
*Sales are seasonal. If you shop when items are “in season,” you’ll likely save more money.
*New brands and products will generally have lower stock up prices than older, well known and loved products.

Coupon With Me: My Coupon Binder (No Clipping)!

Coupon With Me: My Coupon Binder (No Clipping)!

Join me each week as I set out to increase my own stockpile. I’ll be blogging each week and documenting my experience shopping with coupons and learning new methods. If you are new, wanting a coupon buddy, or just looking for a few extra tips – this series is for you! New to the Coupon With Me series? See my first two post HERE.

Well, so far so good. My New Year’s Resolution is moving right along! I got my first set of Sunday coupon inserts today and organized them in my new binder using a new method of NO CLIPPING. Hooray! Clipping each coupon is an awesome way to organize and use coupons, but for me, I’m trying a new method. I created a video (yikes – don’t laugh, I could barely keep a straight face while my husband taped me Coupon With Me: My Coupon Binder (No Clipping)! ) to help explain my new process. Many of you have probably seen a similar method, it’s sort of a compilation of a few different ways I have organized in the past. If you can’t see the video, head over HERE.

Here are the basics:

  • In this new method, I use sheet protectors to hold my inserts and organize by date. Each sheet protector holds one complete insert with each page collated and stapled. On the cover sheet of each insert I write the date the insert arrives and the expiration date of the longest lived coupon. The date helps me to keep each insert organized and the expiration date let’s me know when to throw out the entire insert.
  • I use inexpensive Post-It tab labels the weekly set of each insert within the binder.
  • I also keep a master list of all individual coupons with their insert type and date in which it’s found. This helps me locate specific coupons within the binder. You can find master lists all over the web. Because I’m just starting this method this week I just needed the list of coupons found in the 1/8 inserts. I used Taylor Town Preview for this. PinchingYourPennies and Fabulessly Frugal also have great master list options.
  • I three hole punch entire sheets of internet printables and file them all under a section titled “Internet Printables.”
  • Target Store Printables have their own section and are also three hole punched (no clipping!).
  • A few baseball card holders are kept in the front of the binder to organize random coupons that may have been clipped and not used, blinky coupons, and coupons that I know I want to use in the short term.
  • A binder pencil pouch holds a few useful items: tabs, scissors, preferred cards, calculator, marker or pen.
  • I use paper clips (or bobby pins) to keep inserts from sliding out of the sheet protectors.

Printable Coupons – All You Need To Know

Printable Coupons All You Need To Know

Who want’s to print some money?!

Printable coupons are an awesome resource for any person looking to save money. Outside of newspaper inserts, the web has the most extensive variety of coupons. In an effort to draw in more buyers, almost every company is jumping on the coupon bandwagon and offering customers a way to save on their products. Most savvy couponers take advantage of printable coupons. They are generally higher value and easy to come by.

Here are a few things to know when printing and redeeming coupons:

1.) Printing Limits

Most printable coupons are regulated by special software that allow a limited number of prints per computer. Generally this limit is 2. Take note that this limit is per computer, NOT per printer. When printing regulated coupons, you usually will be prompted to install software or a plug-in. This allows the manufacturer to track the number of prints. You should only be promoted to download during your first print attempt. Most of these service providers offer technical support if needed, but generally it’s a simple, safe and fast process. Bricks (Coupons.com), Catalina (Target & Coupon Network) and Smart Source are of some of the most common types of printable coupon services.

2.) Photo Copying

One of the most common questions I get asked is if you can photo copy printable coupons. The short answer is no. Unfortunately, companies put limits on print numbers for a reason and they mean business. If you print 2 same coupons you will notice unique bar codes or unique time stamps on each coupon. Below is a picture of a Bricks coupon printed twice from my home computer. You’ll notice in the top right corner where the is a bar code that is unique to each coupon. When retailers submit coupons for reimbursement, only coupons with unique codes are refunded. Manufacturers track each code and will not reimburse retailers for copies once a code is submitted. So, if your computer will only allow a limited number of prints, using multiple photocopied versions would essentially be the equivalent of stealing from the retailer.

3.) PDF Coupons

On rare occasion, manufacturers will release PDF or non-regulated coupons. These coupons can be printed an unlimited number of times and can sometimes be saved to your computer for printing at a later date. Because coupon fraud is a booming business, you’ll find that some of these non-regulated coupons are fraudulent and have been created illegally. I recommend only using non-regulated coupons that have posted on verified web sited with legitimate URL’s. You can verify the legitimacy of a coupon by verifying its web address. WHOIS is a helpful resource when checking web addresses. Be careful when printing from web sites that have been recently created or are not owned by the manufacturer represented on the coupon.

4.) Time Sensitive

Printable coupons generally have “print limits”. This limit is different from the per computer limit and refers to the combined number of times a coupon can be printed once released. For example, Nabisco generally releases a new Facebook coupon on the first of each month. The per computer limit is set at two while the general combined print limit is 25,000. This means that once the public has printed 25,000 coupons in total, Nabisco will pull not allow any more prints and will pull the coupon from the web. Another limit may be time. Occasionally you’ll find manufacturers will release a promotional coupon for a limited amount of time. They may let you know how long you have to print, but more often they only hint that the coupon won’t last long – and they don’t usually bluff! You can bet high value coupons go FAST, as well as staple product coupons such as eggs, bread, milk, etc… If you see any of the above, print soon or it may be gone before you get a second chance. I’ve seen coupons disappear within a matter of minutes (or less!) once released.

5.) The 1st of the month

Most large coupon printing sites release new coupons the first of each month. Some older coupons are deleted while others are reset by the manufacturer. “Reset” refers the addition of print limits, both general and per computer. Once reset, they may re-appear on a site  or may be able to be printed once again from your computer. Resets generally happen once a month (most common), once a quarter or twice a year, depending on the coupon. Be sure to check your favorite site at the beginning of each month (and throughout the first week) for new and reset coupons.

 6.) Redeeming Printable Coupons

Most retailers now accept printable coupons. If you are unsure if your store will accept this type of coupon, look up their store policy. You can generally find these on the retailer’s site. Print and take with you a copy of the policy in case you find yourself dealing with an uninformed cashier or manager.

7.) Printable Coupon Resources

Below are a list of the most common sites to find free printable coupons.

8.) A Few Tips

  • The General Mills printing sites (Pillsbury, Betty Crocker & Eat Better America) usually have some like ans some different coupons. You will only be able to print the like ones twice per computer in total. You will not be able to print twice per computer per site. The same is true for The Coupon Network and Target. If you see like coupon on these two sites, only two prints per computer in total will be allowed. In both cases the sites are monitored by the same printing service.
  • Coupons.com is the best, most diverse and most convenient place to find printable coupons. The print limit is generally two per computer, sometimes one. The coupons print 3 per page so you may want to print in multiples of 3 to save paper. After you print a coupon once the coupon will appear on the very last page, so you’ll have to scroll through each page to print the same coupon a second time.
  • If you are looking for a specific product coupon, be sure to check out Facebook. So many companies release promotional Facebook coupons in order to gain a following. Don’t be afraid to use Facebook! “Liking” companies is harmless and can mean access to high value coupons!

How To Save Money On Meat PLUS My Price List!

Meat is expensive and you don’t typically see a coupon in your inserts that says Save $5.00 on Your Next Meat Purchase! Though it would be awesome if there were! Just imagine!

How To Save Money On Meat PLUS My Price List!

One of the top questions I get asked is how to save money on meat purchases and what are great prices on meat!

So I figured I would share here some of my tips to saving money on meat!

#1 - I would recommend being open to different cuts of meat as well as different kinds.

#2 - Meat Stickers!!! This is my biggest money saving strategy as far as meat goes!

My favorite store for meat is Albertsons! I can usually go in there and score some AWESOME meat deals thanks to Managers Stickers! I have seen meat with discounts up to $6.00 Off!!! Just recently I purchased 6lbs of Boneless Chicken Breasts for a grand total of $4.00 ($.66/lb.) The reason this meat has stickers on it is because it is close to it’s sell by date! Doesn’t mean you can’t take it home, freeze it and use later. Anytime I tell someone about how I get my meat so cheap, they always give me this weird look — like I’m buying rotten meat or something. I have been buying my meat this way for a long time — I promise you there is nothing wrong with it! How To Save Money On Meat PLUS My Price List! I have found that looking for these stickers is best to do in the morning because you will have more of a selection!

#3 – Watch for BOGO Free Sales. Not always are these the best of deals, just look at the price per lb after the discount to make sure it is a good price. Some stores do increase their price before they set up a BOGO Free Sale on meat.

#4 – I try to purchase meat to where I can make two meals out of it.

For example: I bought a 3lb Whole Fryer Chicken for $1.44 (had a meat sticker!)

Dinner 1 Rotisserie Style Chicken in the crock pot (I am a HUGE Crock Pot Fan!)
Dinner 2 Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup in the crockpot (used left over chicken from the night before)

#5 – If your store allows overage from coupons, you can use this to drop your meat price!

#6 -
Meal Plan. Plan your menu for the week around your stores meat sales. I have found an awesome site that has many big chain stores in it’s database and their weekly sales. This site is FREE and it can even show you recipes to make with this meat that is on sale! Head over and check out Food on the Table!

If you have any tips to add to this, please feel free to comment below!
Below you will see my price list for meat — Feel free to print this and keep it in your binder for your shopping trips!

Diaper Stock Up Price Points

Diaper Stock Up Price Points

When people first walk into my stockpile room — the first things out of their mouth are “The diapers … how … Huggies … that must have cost a fortune?” I will admit, at first sight they were a little overwhelming, however I am hoping I’m stocked up until my youngest is potty trained.

Before I get into this post too much, I do want to explain that Huggies are and have always been my go to diapers. Even way back in the Dark Ages of my life, or my pre-coupon days (you can read this HERE.) Both of my daughters (just like their mommy) have sensitive skin and Huggies are the only diaper that didn’t give them a rash or irritate their skin. So my price points have always been based off Huggies, though for this post I will put in what I feel are good stock up prices for generic brands as well.

So we all know that babies go through TONS of diapers! I have read in articles, the average family spends $1,000 PER YEAR on diapers, per child. So if you have 2 children in diapers, that is $2,000 a year! Do you have goosebumps right now?  I did too! That is a lot of money right there!

So here is a list I have made — and I hand this out regularly to those new mom’s learning to shop with coupons for them to keep in their binder.

Please keep in mind, the price changes buy size because the amount of diapers in the package changes by size.

Also, a tip from one mommy to the next, your child will not be in the Newborn size long, so if you find a great deal don’t by them up like crazy, just a few will do. My first daughter was in them for 2 1/2 weeks, the second, exactly 1 week!!

In the chart below, I consider Huggies and Pampers brand name and everything else generic.

Diaper Stock Up Price Points

So the next question is where I am going to find these sort of prices??

Typically your drugstores like CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid. You will usually get these prices using  a manufacture coupon + rewards deal and/or store coupon.

However, the #1 hot spot for diaper stock up prices is Amazon! I know what you are thinking. Diapers, Amazon — What the heck is she talking about. But it’s true. Even better, Amazon does the math for you, as in how much you are paying per diaper!

For Example right now you can get Pampers and Huggies on Amazon at Stock up Prices!

Diaper Stock Up Price Points     Diaper Stock Up Price Points

Notice how the Pampers and Huggies are both within Stock up price when you select Subscribe and Save?

The importance of Subscribe and Save is that you get an additional 20% of the price PLUS they are shipped to your home on your schedule (like once a month, every two months, etc.) AND the shipping is FREE with this option!

HOWEVER, say you only need one case. Still order it through the Subscribe and Save option, and once you receive it, cancel you subscribe and save order!!!

Another great thing about Amazon is that it has most of the same coupons available to you that your Sunday paper would! About midway on the page you will see something that looks like this if there is a coupon available:

Diaper Stock Up Price Points

So now the Pampers actually cost $43.83 for a case of 192 size 4 diapers OR $.22 per diaper!

So there you have it —- the big bang diaper theory of mine! :) Feel free to print the little chart above for your own binder!
