Garden With Me: More Planting! ~ Tomatoes, Peppers, Zucchini, Cucumbers

PinExt Garden With Me: More Planting! ~ Tomatoes, Peppers, Zucchini, Cucumbers

My gardening adventures continue icon smile Garden With Me: More Planting! ~ Tomatoes, Peppers, Zucchini, Cucumbers  The weather in my area has been relatively warm lately, so I just couldn’t resist planting some more.  Generally, the rule of thumb is to wait till after Mother’s Day, but…I’ve never been good at following rules icon smile Garden With Me: More Planting! ~ Tomatoes, Peppers, Zucchini, Cucumbers  If the weather decides to freeze on me, I’ll CRY and CRY some more.

So I headed on down to Home Depot and bought some tomato plants, green and red bell peppers, jalapeno peppers,  (can you tell I plan to do some canned salsa icon smile Garden With Me: More Planting! ~ Tomatoes, Peppers, Zucchini, Cucumbers ), zucchini and cucumber plants.  17 plants in all!

(I was too lazy (and to scared) to start the planting process with seeds indoors and then transfer.  I’ve heard that sometimes the plants don’t always survive once transferred.  And when the store does the work for you….well, it just seemed the way to go for me icon smile Garden With Me: More Planting! ~ Tomatoes, Peppers, Zucchini, Cucumbers

Here lies my zucchini and cucumber plants….

and tomatoes and peppers….

I must say it’s very exciting to see some green in the garden with all these plants.  But I’m happy to report my lettuce and onions are growing well, and the carrots are beginning to show.  But my peas are just plain sad.  Don’t know what happened there.  Only about half of what I planted actually sprouted.  Darn.

How are your gardening adventures coming along?  Next up for me is corn and pumpkins and then I shall sit back and watch everything grow.  Looking forward to that icon smile Garden With Me: More Planting! ~ Tomatoes, Peppers, Zucchini, Cucumbers

Garden With Me: Potatoes and Onions are in!

PinExt Garden With Me: Potatoes and Onions are in!

How is your garden coming along??  If you haven’t started yet, no worries – you still have time!  Last week I was gone for Spring Break and as soon as I got back, I was very excited to see if anything was growing yet.  And to my delight, little patches of lettuce were peaking through the dirt.  It’s only been a couple of weeks, so not much else, but believe me when I say I was SO HAPPY.  Yeah, you can tell this is my first garden ever icon smile Garden With Me: Potatoes and Onions are in!

img 0235 300x199 Garden With Me: Potatoes and Onions are in!

Anyway, I got moving yesterday and planted some potatoes and onions.  Both of these were done with “starts”.  Who knew that you actually plant potatoes with….potatoes!  (Not the kind in the store, though.  Those are sprayed and won’t germinate – so I’ve been told).  But I got these from a local nursery for dirt cheap and set about cutting and quartering them…..

img 0219 300x225 Garden With Me: Potatoes and Onions are in!

The idea is to get an “eye” on each piece and then plant that facing up.

img 0220 300x225 Garden With Me: Potatoes and Onions are in!

Once I had them in I built a “mound” over the top (yeah, I know my rows aren’t straight, but who’s judging here?)

img 0234 199x300 Garden With Me: Potatoes and Onions are in!

Then off to my onions….

img 0236 200x300 Garden With Me: Potatoes and Onions are in!

Planted these a few inches into to soil, and wa-la!

img 0237 199x300 Garden With Me: Potatoes and Onions are in!

That’s it!  Now, a question for you experienced gardeners….I noticed when planting my onions, I had a bunch of ants in the dirt.  I googled some info and some sources say ants aren’t a problem, and some say there are.  (Real helpful, by the way).  So I’d like to consult you trusty readers.  Have any of you had problems with ants?  And what tips and tricks do you have to keeping away other nasty pests??

And watering too – I’m debating on whether to set up sprays or use drip tubing – pros and cons?? I would love to hear your advice!
