DIY: Use Egg Cartons as Seed Starters!

seedling

We are still getting freezing temps at night here in my neck of the woods but I just can’t wait to start gardening.

Typically I use the little eco-friendly Jiffy pots, until I saw on Pinterest that I can just reuse egg cartons. Mind blown. 🙂

As a family of 4, we go through plenty of eggs. So I saved a few of cartons to test it out. Plus I had some bags of soil I got on clearance last fall.

All you have to do is poke a little hole in the bottom of each container you intend to use for drainage. Nothing huge, just use a pen or pencil and make it the size of the tip of that item.

Next, put some soil in each little compartment.

Plant your seeds in the soil according to the packages. Place in a sunny window or room and watch them grow!

I set my cartons on a piece of cardboard to catch any excess water. There is not much though because I use a spray bottle.

I place mine outside during the day to get some sun. If you need some humidity, just place a pencil in the middle of one and make a saran wrap teepee!

When it is time to put them in the ground, the cartons are biodegradable so just tear off each compartment and place in the ground.

Easy and you are reusing what would be waste! Win – Win!!
