DIY Natural 3 Ingredient Softening Lip Moisturizer!

I’m so happy it’s finally starting to warm up outside! I love playing in the sun in less than three layers of clothes! What I’m not so fond of is the unfortunate peeling lips that tend to come along with the cold to warm weather transition. Luckily, there are ways to help speed up the exfoliating process. What’s even better is making a softening lip moisturizer of your own that doesn’t cost a pretty penny. And, most of you already have everything you need right in your kitchen cabinets!

Ready to do it yourself?

Here’s what you need:

  • Coconut Oil
  • Brown Sugar
  • Honey
  • Small Altoids tin (or any small pot container)

*If you don’t have coconut oil, you can use petroleum jelly. Just know there is some controversy about using it on your lips and it turns your natural product into a not so natural moisturizer.

Take 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of coconut oil and place it into a microwaveable container. Place the container with your coconut oil into your microwave for about 10 seconds. If it’s not fully melted, place it into the microwave in 5 second intervals until the coconut oil is fully liquified.

Next, sprinkle brown sugar into the melted oil. Be sure to add your sugar slowly to prevent clumping.

Now, add 1/4th a teaspoon of honey to your mixture (I only added half to my 1/2 tsp. measuring spoon).

Next, give your mixture a quick stir and pour it into your container. You may want to add a few more sprinkles of sugar if the mixture is sitting at the bottom.

Now, let your container sit until the coconut oil returns to it’s solid state and it’s ready to use!

Just rub a bit onto your lips at night before you head to bed. Make sure to make small circles with your finger to help exfoliate the dead skin.

That’s all there is too it! Don’t you just love simple, at home, beauty treatments?!

Oh, don’t tote this moisturizer around with you! Leave this one at home. Coconut oil has a low melting point and carrying it around will surely result in an oily purse mess later!

  • Thanks so much! 🙂

  • Definitely going to try this. My lips have become so chapped thanks to the prolonged winter!

    • Farhana, I hear you! This has really helped me a lot. It starts off a bit greasy but if you can leave it on (it tastes good! It’s hard not to lick off), the moisture will soak right in. It’s amazing what natural ingredients can do for the skin! I hope you enjoy it! Thanks for reading. 🙂

  • Hello, I was wondering if you can recommend a different natural base than coconut oil. Everyone in my family is allergic to coconut but we like to use organic so petroleum jelly is not something we use.

    • Hi, Kena! You can certainly use something other than coconut oil to make your balm! You can use another type of “butter” like Aloe Vera or Shea. Shea is a little harder to melt down though (typically, you’d have to use a double broiler). So, if you don’t want to spend too much time putting this together, I’d go with the Aloe Vera Butter. You can find small containers of it at your larger natural food stores (like Whole Foods) too. I hope this helps!

  • Anxious to try this, could you please tell me how much brown sugar you use?
