Using Coupons At Gas Stations!

up2u Using Coupons At Gas Stations!

Almost every gas station you go into has a “mark down” section and you can usually pick up great deals with these! This week I found a bunch of the Mentos UP2U Gum marked down to $.45 a pack! I had a stack full of the $1.00/2 UP2U Coupons and was able to get FREE GUM! **They did change the price to the gum to $.50, so it was free and not a MM.

This post is just to remind you to always have your coupons with you, even if you leave them in the car, because you NEVER know where you find sweet deal like this!

The Journey Into Coupons – Amber’s Story!

PinExt The Journey Into Coupons Ambers Story!

I am regularly asked at the store, and by friends, why do you coupon, and have even been called a hoarder! I shudder when I have to think back to my pre-couponing days, or The Dark Ages. However, yes, I used to be one of  those normal shoppers long ago. In a time of  an empty fridge and an empty pantry! My husband lost his job back in 2009, on my oldest daughter’s 1st birthday, and two days later, we found out we were pregnant with daughter #2. My life felt as though it was falling apart — how was I going to support a family of four off my meager part-time job. I don’t know if it was my amped up hormones or not, but I just cried! I had no idea what to do! So a few months went by and we lost every luxury we had, TV, phone, you name it and it was gone! My fridge and pantry had the barest of essentials and we were eating lots of cheap items - including Ramen Noodles!

Then I started getting random coupons here and there for Huggies (even at my brokest point, I still had to use Huggies because of my kids’ sensitive skin) and other name brand items in the mail. However, when I went to the store, even after the coupon savings, it was still cheaper to buy the generic brand. Until one day, I was in the mark down area, and I got some KC Masterpiece BBQ Sauce for $.09! I was so excited! Then I realized the importance of using coupons the right way, wait for a sale on that item.  I started to hold on to them in my wallet, then a little file holder, and eventually in a binder. My couponing journey started out a very slow pace — until I scored my first freebie — and then my question as to how I would feed my family of 4 was answered!

Finally, there were food items in my pantry, instead of cob webs. There were items in fridge again other than milk, eggs, and cheese. Best of all — we were able to eat items other than a whole bunch of Ramen noodles!  Two  years later — My pantry is stuffed full, my fridge is filled, and I need an extra freezer!  I also now have an overflow, to where my spare bedroom has turned into what my three year old calls “Mom’s Store” or my stockpile. (Also the husband has a new job, which has allowed to me to be a stay at home mommy!)

I know that starting out with coupons can be overwhelming, and that with the amount of people doing it, it can be disappointing to not find that sale item of the week or that freebie! Don’t worry, the sale will come back, you will see it again, so don’t get discouraged! A stockpile, like the one’s you see on Extreme Couponing, do not just happen over night. Pace yourself slowly when building your stockpile. Meaning when you see brownies for $.49 a box, don’t go blowing half of your grocery budget on that item just because that is the cheapest you have ever seen them! You will see that sale again, only get what your family will use for a 3-4 month period, and wait for that next sale.

I have also seen some nasty glares in many of my local stores when I walk in with this intimating binder. You may have also seen those lurking eyes in your own store. Whenever someone at the store says any kind of harsh comment to me, I always just say to them, “Everyone is trying to save their family money, and this is just another way I do it.”  They usually leave it at that, and walk off doing their own thing.

All in all, couponing fed my family, and gave light to my very darkest of days. Now that I am in the sunny days of my life, it has also allowed me to do one more important thing, giving to others. Through multiple months and multiple sales cycles, I have accumlated well over 500 razors, thousands of packets of misc. food items, and over 100 BBQ sauces! Now if I were to keep all of these for my family, then yes, I suppose you could call me a hoarder. However, I like to save these items up throughout the months, and then take them to different food banks in my area. There are families out there being hit harder than my family was, and it’s heartbreaking. There is nothing better than knowing that you helped someone, or families  in need.  With Thanksgiving and Christmas just around the corner, I’m getting my piles ready!

So, now that I put it all out there for you, how and why did you start to coupon?

Big Changes: No More “Buying” Coupons?

coupons Big Changes: No More Buying Coupons?

I’ve got some bad news for those who order and purchase inserts and coupons. Looks like their has been some backlash, possibly in part to the TLC series Extreme Couponing, by insert producing companies such as Red Plum and Smart Source. Read the following e-mail sent by a whole insert seller to their customers:

“As many of you know I am a newspaper manager. We received emails today from our corporate office regarding coupon distribution and disposal.
Apparently Red Plum, Smart Source and P&G are filing suit against eBay for allowing the buying and selling of coupons. They are also in talks regarding the same with TLC. According to them it`s all considered coupon fraud.
Before, we were allowed to give away the leftover q`s and those returned from papers that did not sell. We must now destroy all leftover inserts immediately. Newspaper employees are allowed to take home ONE insert per family member , per household.
They are going to do everything possible to make it almost impossible to get coupons without buying the actual newspapers. They are also going to shut down all online sites that sell whole coupon inserts.”
So, it appears MAJOR change is coming.

As bad as this sounds, there might not be a complete end to purchasing coupons. Here is another e-mail sent by a coupon seller to customers:

“I was contacted by, a representative from, SVP News America Marketing, GM Smart Source iGroup. After looking into sources of our supply, I received an email back stating that “As long as you are buying the newspapers at retail rates or subscriber rates, I don’t believe there is an issue”.”

I’m not sure what to think anymore! I can’t guarantee any of this information as it’s all second had via Green Bay Consumer. I did want to pass it along, for informational purposes. Any thoughts? icon smile Big Changes: No More Buying Coupons?

Extreme Couponing: Why I Just Say No :)

2011 06 15 Extreme Couponing: Why I Just Say No :)

Ok, ok, I know what your thinking, “great, another post on Extreme Couponing.” Trust me, I’m more sorry than you to have jumped on the crazy”extreme” bandwagon, but I have stuff to say :). Plus, what kind of coupon blogger would I be if I didn’t say all most of stuff I thought about couponing?

If you’re new to couponing, or even if you have been around a while and are just getting frustrated and worn out, I understand you pain! While what they do on this TLC show is doable for some people in certain areas, it’s just not reasonable. These people have put hours and hours and hours into their shopping trips, have spent money not shown on buying coupons, and most have received “special treatment” from stores that is reserved for only those with a camera crew following them. It’s an inspiring show no doubt, and does a lot of good – but it’s time for a reality check icon smile Extreme Couponing: Why I Just Say No :) .

I spent a couple of years clipping 6 inserts each Sunday and heading out to the stores 3 or 4 times a week and let me tell you – I saved a ton! It wasn’t unheard of for me to walk out of a store saving 80%, even upwards of 90%. Maybe I was’t buying $5,000 worth for $10, but I was saving like crazy on real everyday items. Couponing works. Not only did it cut my monthly budget in half (to about $200 for a family of 4), but I was bringing home more than 4X as much stuff.! It truly was amazing, and slightly addicting icon smile Extreme Couponing: Why I Just Say No :) . That is what I consider my expereince as an “extreme couponer.” It was good, for a while…

Times changed. I got busy.  My coupons started piling up in a kitchen drawer (then 2 drawers), my coupon binder was full of expired coupons, and I was missing some great sale and feeling so guilty! Cleared shelves stressed me out. I was getting burnt out. I really started hating my once beloved coupons it but knew I needed to save. I’ve since re-adjusted my couponing strategy. I stopped clipping coupons and now coupon a few times a month at most and guess what? I still save a ton of money and have a great stockpile! (Read more on my couponing tips strategy and coupon on 10 minutes a day.)

I have taught myself to just say no when it comes to going to extremes (in all things really). I understand extreme couponing works for some families, and some need it to work based on financial circumstances. I respect that 100%! Been there, done that! In fact, maybe in a few months I’ll renew my newspaper subscription and go at it again. But for now, I have found a better way to make couponing to work in my life instead of becoming my life.

I love discussion and would love to hear everyone’s opinions so join in and tell me what you think! How do you make couponing work for you?
