Rigatoni with Italian Sausage in a Tomato Cream Sauce

I was craving a nice hearty pasta the other day, as my friend had just told me about a tasty pasta dish that she likes to make with sage, Italian sausage and a tomato cream sauce…I could not get it out of my head!  Since I couldn’t get the recipe from her the day I wanted to make it, I looked around for one that I could use and just fit it to suit what I had on hand.  I knew I wanted a tomato cream sauce, and I had some ground Italian sausage in the freezer, so this is what I came up with.
Note: The recipe I found was adapted from The Pioneer Woman Cooks.
Serves 6 for about $0.85/serving
1 pound pasta, any kind – ($0.98)
1 lb. ground Italian sausage – ($2.28)
1 small onion, diced – ($0.33)
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 Tbsp. dried Italian seasoning
1 can (28 ounces) tomato sauce – ($0.96)
1/2 cup whole milk
1/2 cup sour cream – ($0.38)
Cook pasta as directed on package, but less a minute (pasta will finish cooking in sauce).
While pasta is cooking, brown up sausage, onion and garlic over medium heat.
When nicely browned, drop temperature to medium-low, add tomato sauce and seasonings, and heat for about 2 minutes.
Then stir in sour cream and milk and heat thru.

When pasta is finished, add to sauce and combine well.   Serve immediately.
